Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin identified a number of key features which distinguish the music video as a form, before you understand his theory you need to understand some key terminology. If you click on the key terms you will be taken to videos which best illustrate these terms
Illustrate: Images used to represent the meanings of the lyrics and genre (this is the most common feature of a music video) this is very often literal.
Disjuncture: When the meaning of the song is completely ignored
Amplify: Meanings and effects are manipulated and constantly shown throughout the video and shown to the audience (basically repetition).
- There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contrasting the lyrics.
- There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contrasting the music.
- Genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconography
- Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist
- Voyeurism is present in many music videos, especially in the treatment of females, but also in terms of systems of looking. Some examples are screens within screens, cameras, mirrors, etc.
- there are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans

Busted music video: Pre Production, production and post production
Pre-Production
During the pre production stage of our music videos we needed to story board all the shots needed to re-create the Busted music video ‘thats what i go to school for.’ we watched the music video repeatedly so that we could get the right camera angles used, the props needed in each shot and which characters would be needed in every shot. Once we had all the shots we re-watched the video noting down how long each song lasted for and what lyrics were said in each of the shots. Once we had all of the story board we seperated into seprate groups of four and practiced lip syncing so that we would be in time with the actual song. After we had practiced lip syncing our group chose who would play the lead band members( me, Andy and Neil) and who would be an extra, we also had to decide on a location( E-learning centre) of where to film and what days we were going to film so that everybody could bring in the right props. The pre production stage of re-creating an already existing music video is very time consuming as you have to re-watch the music video repeatedly to ensure that you have all of the right shots. Timings have to be very precise aswell so that our video fits intime with the song and doesnt look ou of sink.
Production
During the production stage of making our music video we used the upper part of our library to re-create a classroom becuase there was a number of single desks we could use, this required us to move chairs and desks to try and recreate the Busted classroom. During the classroom scenes we had to use a number of props such as a chalk board and all the cast had to wear school uniform. However we did have a few problems some of the props, such as an old film projector, were unavailable which means we had to slightly change that scene, another problem we had was that some of the class did not bring their costume which meant they couldnt be in the shot. We followed the story board making sure we used the correct shots, props, characters and lyrics were used in the correct shot. We used two locations for our music video (inside the E-learning centre and behind the e-earning centre.) outside the e-learning centre was used as it gave us a towering building behind the band which is similar to that in the busted video, we had to use portable speakers whilst we were outside so that we could keep a track of lyric timing. Whilst we where outside we needed to use guitars and pretend to play them; this was quite difficult as it required us to lipsync, dance and pretend to play an instrument making it look realistic. The problems arose in production due to the fact some people didn’t bring the right uniform but also many shots had to be retaken because they weren’t in time with the song, also we had to re-film a whole section because a character had shaved there head.
Post-production
This was probably the most difficult part of the whole process. It required us to upload the shots and select certain shots to fit in correctly to the story board and in time with the song so that they were perfectly synced. This required a lot of time and effort another problem we had to deal with was that due to the lack of time a few shots had to be missed out of the story board and replaced with pre recorded shots so that we could keep the song and clips in sync , this was fairly easy to do with iMovie as it allowed us to slow down or shorten clips to fit into the song. We separated certain parts of the song to be editied by certain people so that everbody edited roughly the same amount we also checked eachothers work to ensure that it all was correct.
